What does BFIG do?

The group was created for the mutual acquirement of knowledge and experience about the stock market.  It is the hope that all members will leave the club upon graduation with a better understanding of the financial world.  We attempt to achieve this aim through three key initiatives:

  1. Operating a quasi-mutual fund, directed by members of the club, to allow for direct profiting from the stock market and to gain experience through direct activities.
  2. Holding seminars on relevant topics including financial careers, current trends, long term factors, etc.  Many speakers are brought in to discuss these and many more issues with members in an informal setting.
  3. Holding club meetings and operating the discussion board to foster an atmosphere of camaraderie between members, in the hopes of keeping ties after graduation.

How much does it cost to become a member?

There is a $15 mandatory fee to join the club.  This covers supplies for the executive operating the group, payment for the website, purchasing gifts for speakers, holding contests for club members, etc.  This fee is for the entire year, and must be paid by all new members.

Do I need to invest to be a member?

No, you do not need to purchase any shares to become a member.  You can be a member, and attend all meetings without owning any shares.  Only members can vote on issues regarding buying or selling shares though, so most members purchase at least 1 share so they can register a vote on all issues.

How do the Shares work?

The shares are a collection of capital from members.  The group takes that capital, and invests in various stocks throughout the year.  Like a mutual fund, the price per share increases or decreases depending on the performance of the shares which are owned by the group.  Shares can be bought at any point during the year, and are only redeemable at specific points during the year (beginning and end of each semester.)  Shares can be immediatly redeemed in an emergency situation, or for any other reason, but a 15% fee may be imposed on the redeemed amount.
